Karisma Alenovitz – Audiology Internship

I am currently an Intern at Resonance Audiology, located on Main Street in New Holland. This office usually has two people working, Dr. Horan and Jody. A small office makes the environment a lot more personal and easier to learn. Therefore, the overall environment is very friendly and welcoming. Here at Resonance Audiology, we deal with mostly older patients, but it’s not rare to have a young person come in. Working with all age groups has really opened my eyes to how many similarities and differences they have from a medical perspective. This is important to me because I initially came here to learn the ins and out of the medical field, not to become an audiologist.

When I first decided I wanted to do an internship I wanted to become a radiologist technologist. Although, that is still my goal, after interning under Dr. Horan I am starting to second-guess this career goal. If I did not have to go to college for eight-plus years, I would defiantly become an audiologist. Dr. Horan continues to inspire and teach me everything he knows. On my first day I had no clue what I was truly in for, nor did I have any knowledge about the medical field. Now, only after two months, I know how to schedule and maneuver around medical websites, do all front desk work, and clean hearing aids.

A regular day as an intern at Resonance Audiology includes logging into my computer and checking the schedule. I will do any miscellaneous work like addressing birthday cards, filling up the candy jar, and/or organizing the website CounselEar. Once a patient arrives, I will clean their hearing aid and head into the office with Dr. Horan. Then, I take detailed patient chart notes about anything that goes on during the appointment. When the appointment is over, I schedule them for their next appointment and then get prepared for the next patient. I will clean the area, and once a week I will sanitize all tools that were used. Sometimes there is time between patients, and I will do front desk work with Jody. When I am with Jody she teaches me how to scan papers, take payments, and learn different websites that they use. Not only do I get to learn the doctor’s environment, but I also get to gain knowledge of necessary front desk work.

In summary, I undoubtedly love my position and my job duties. I also enjoy talking to and observing patients. Any career in the medical field involves talking with patients and learning how to interact with everyone. My position has really helped me speak to anyone easily. I have learned so much in such little time that will help me in my future career goals. Moreover, I cannot wait for the next few months of learning and will be sad to leave, but I will forever use my experience anywhere I go.
