Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Abby O’Neill – Journalism & Marketing Internship

My name is Abigail O’Neill and I am an intern at Garden Spot Village with their Marketing and Creative team. I work in the main building of Garden Spot Village in a small room where big things for the community happen. Garden Spot Village is a retirement home that offers various lifestyles for people ages 55 and up. The creative team at GSV consists of a storyteller, a graphic designer, and a website designer. Each of these roles covers all promotional aspects that go through Garden Spot Village,

I work at Garden Spot Village three times a week for two hours a day. No two days are the same in this job seeing that there is always something going on in the community. One of my favorite things to do is interview residents and employees for feature articles. In this task, I prepare questions, conduct a face-to-face interview, take notes, and then create an article that highlights the conversation. This is just the tip of the iceberg of possible tasks for my internship. Some of the many jobs I have include proofreading, brainstorming magazine ideas, attending meetings, writing thank-you notes, writing Facebook posts, sound testing for the podcast, helping photographers film virtual tours, and so much more. Currently, I am writing articles on residents and employees that could get published in Garden Spot Village’s Destination magazine!

As someone who has wrestled with career options for a very long time, this internship has opened my eyes to new possibilities. I had always thought that I would end up study business, but throughout my internship, I have looked further into communications. My internship has exposed me to a real-world workplace with deadlines and high expectations. The experiences I have at Garden Spot will help me in any job I have in the future, regardless of what realm it falls into. My internship has allowed me to grow as a writer and get feedback from residents and my mentor.

As I look forward to the rest of my senior year, I am glad that I pursued an internship. I am grateful that I get to work in a professional setting and learn from people that have studied and worked in marketing for years. Looking into the rest of my internship, I am excited to continually grow my portfolio and work towards getting published. My internship constantly faces me with new skillsets and tasks that push me to be a better employee and writer. I am very happy with what I have learned so far with Garden Spot Village’s creative team.
