Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Destiny Martin – Communication Internship

My name is Destiny Martin, and I am the intern for the Garden Spot District office under Justin Johnson in the Media and Communications department. I do many different jobs there including running social media accounts and traveling to the elementary school buildings for pictures and interviews. I am there for three days a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for two hours each day, from 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM. I get to work on many different projects this semester, but the one that I am currently working on is getting the ELANCO Extra Newsletter out into the public’s eyes.

There are some tasks that I complete every day as soon as I walk into the district office. First, I say good morning to everyone then go straight into my little office and log into my computer. I check social media emails and respond to any important ones. I then go onto the communications calendar and check if there is anything that needs to be posted on our social media accounts, such as picture day or a fun day in the middle school. I then move on to the sports on the YouTube channel. I check if I need to create any posts through Canva, if they are already completed for that week, I then submit them to Justin, and then from there they are posted on Twitter and Facebook.

I get to be a part of many different projects, the biggest one that Justin and I are working on is the ELANCO Extra Newsletter. We had the idea to have the main article about how learning has continued even though the circumstances we are in right now. I have interviewed students and teachers to get their perspectives on school right now. I have gotten information on Spotworks, the program that Mr. Long and Mr. Fulmer are running this year, and Spartanponics, a small business that students in the agricultural department are running. I will also gather information about all that is going on in the Elementary buildings and include that in the newsletter as well.

This internship has taught me a lot in these short eight weeks that I have been there. For example, there are so many little things that go into the marketing and advertising side of a business. It takes the right attitude and perseverance to be at a job in this field of work. Even though I still am not 100% sure what I want to do after high school this internship made me think more about going into the marketing field. It has given me many opportunities that are greatly beneficial to my future, and I could see myself going further into this profession.

In conclusion, this internship at the district office under Justin Johnson has taught me many things that are giving me many different opportunities in the future. Working on projects such as the Elanco Newsletter, interviewing different people from different buildings, and working with social media has given me a big look into a side of marketing. It has shown me what a profession in marketing could look like, and given me a better vision of what I want to do in the future.
