Garden Spot High School

Alenis Rodriguez-Serrano – Education Internship

In this Fall school year, I decided to be part of the Garden Spot High School Internship program. My career goal is to become an elementary teacher.  Due to COVID issues, an education internship was not able to happen.  So instead, I am an intern in the high school office. I am mainly there to help the secretaries with a little part of their work. Even though is not that much related to my career goal it is still at a school and it also gives me an understanding of what systems teachers and employees follow.

My duties for my internship change daily.  I do not have a specific routine. I would say that the only thing that I do that it will be consider a routine would be putting mail in teacher’s mailboxes. As all my other duties change every day. Some days I would work with the remote learner’s mailboxes, others I would work on organizing supplies and other I would work on organizing and stamping some papers. And that is one of the reasons I like my internship because it is not the same routine every day.

I have grown in many ways from doing this internship. First, I have grown to be more independent as most of the things I do there I have to do them by myself. I have learned to speak up when I struggle with something or do not understand something. It has also given me a perspective on how a job is, as I never had a job. It has also made me be more responsible and be more cautious with what I do, because even filing the mail is a big responsibility.

Lastly, even though this internship is not like what I want to do in the future, it has influenced my view of what a secretary exactly is and does. And I think that I would consider it as one of my second options for my career goal. From what I have seen, is a really good job, that could help develop several skills for different jobs.
