Mallory Davis – Education Internship

Hi, my name is Mallory Davis and I am a Secondary Education Intern with Mrs. Williams. The class I intern with is a 9th grade English class that keeps Mrs. Williams, my mentor, and I on our toes. I will be interning with this class for the rest of the semester, in hopes to observe the teaching styles of one of my former teachers. Although my semester has consisted of three internships, I am thankful for the opportunities Mrs. Williams has provided me in learning more about the field of education.

Within the classroom, my jobs are just about the same every day. I take attendance for the in-person students and the virtual students. For me, taking attendance has been a great way for me to self-check my learning of each student’s name, while developing a routine of a few duties of a teacher. Each day I am also responsible for monitoring the zoom chat. For almost every teacher it has become difficult to maintain a fair division of attention between the in-person and remote learners, so being able to monitor the zoom chat and help out the remote learners has helped Mrs. Williams. Additionally, each week one of my responsibilities is to create a Kahoot review game for the students based on the weekly vocabulary words. Then, each Thursday I present it to the class. Right now, I am currently in what I call the “observation phase.” I have taught a couple lessons to the class with the support of Mrs. Williams, so now I work on the other routine things like printing, making copies, reading articles for students, etc.  The student’s score on the weekly quizzes have shown the review I create to be successful. Overall, having assignments for myself that I work on help, in the long run, to ensure I end the procrastination habit that I once had. Personally, I think my favorite job of my internship is being able to work with the students and connect with them. It has only been 3 years since I was a 9th grader, so being able to help students and understand the struggle that comes with English class has shown me the importance of having good teachers that not only put effort into each student but also work hard to create a positive learning environment.

Additionally, my internship has taught me a lot about myself. Going through three internships in a semester due to COVID-19 reasons has really taught me the importance of patience. I am incredibly grateful for internships being offered to juniors and seniors because it is a great experience being able to get a glimpse at a career you are interested in. In the future, this internship will prepare me for my intended teaching career from the lessons I have learned from my mentor and other teachers as well as advice given from those around me. I have grown a new level of respect for anybody who has been or currently is a teacher.

Overall, I think that this internship showed me that teaching is what I want to follow through with after high school. Despite being in a 9th-grade classroom rather than at the younger end of education, being able to observe teaching styles and get a glimpse at different levels of teaching has been a good experience to have. Additionally, teaching 9th grade has also given me a clear message that early childhood education or elementary education is what I will pursue a career in. I hope that in the future I can apply the lessons, my mentor, Mrs. Williams, has taught me about teaching and developing a good connection with students and families.
