Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Kate Hershey – Marketing & Photography Internship

This year I have the privilege of having a photography internship with Webstaurant Store. The building I intern at is located in Lititz. However, the company is expanding rapidly throughout the United States and now have facilities nationwide. This internship has helped me gain knowledge about studio photography and the skill set needed for the job.

When I first arrive at my internship my mentor walks me through what I will be doing that day. I do tasks such as unpacking items, assembling items, setting up sets for a shoot, and assisting the photographers as needed. One of the projects I am currently working on is organizing and assisting a shoot for sauce bottles (ketchup and dressing). A project a co-worker and I just finished was unpacking and prepping six soft drink mixers.

In all the projects I do there are always challenges and successes involved. For example, I am still learning the format the studio uses for the photo booths. That makes it challenging to independently set up for a shoot. In addition, over the course of the past few months, I have been able to grasp the complex computer network and programs the company uses on a daily basis. This has allowed me to better assist the photographers and understanding the overall company on a higher level.

I have grown not only my skills as a photographer but also experience in a professional work environment. I now know the meaning of basic pictures, staged pictures, front of house, back of house, and much more. Being able to observe the photographers while they work and ask questions about things they do help grow my knowledge of studio photography. My internship has also influenced what I want to investigate as a career after high school. I now know that I want to work somewhere that has a family-based culture and understands their employees’ personalities. This internship has made me more passionate about pursuing a career in photography after high school.
