Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Paige Kemper – Elementary Education Internship

My name is Paige Kemper and I intern at Brecknock Elementary School and Garden Spot High School. On Monday and Wednesday I intern at Brecknock Elementary in Mrs. Smoker’s emotional support class and on Tuesday and Thursday I intern at Garden Spot with Mrs. Hull’s life skills class. I spend about an hour and a half in the classroom every day.

On Monday and Wednesday, my daily routine begins with helping students with IXL and ST math on their computers. There are ten students in her class ranging from 1st grade to 6th grade.  It can be challenging to go from working with a 1st grader to helping a 6th grader.  Next, I normally observe Mrs. Smoker’s individual lessons with the students. I have really enjoyed bonding with these students, as well as learning more about this career from my mentor.

On Tuesday and Thursday, my daily routine starts with normally helping the life skills students with assembling alert-all packets for the fire department or helping to assemble keystone boxes. I help keep track of how many packets or boxes the students complete and record them on a piece of paper so the students can get paid. Lastly, occasionally on Thursdays, I will help Mrs. Yemen set up the café for Friday where the students sell coffee and food to teachers.  Another project I have recently completed with the students is stuffing plastic Easter eggs with candy.  Overall, I have really enjoyed my experience interning with Mrs. Hull’s class.  All of her students are super sweet and fun to work with.

It has been very helpful to work with both elementary special ed and high school special ed. I enjoy both of them, but it has really shown me I like working with high school students more. Although I am not positive about my future career goals, these internships have helped me see that I could be a teacher. I have learned so much from both of these internships and I’m excited to learn even more next quarter!
