Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

2019 Pathways 2 Your Future Event

The 1st Annual Pathways 2 Your Future event was held on March 13.  All juniors were required to attend and rotate through three different sessions; Internship Fair, Reality Fair, Counselor Information Session.

The Internship Fair had 30 companies representing 50+ opportunities.  Students were able to develop their networking skills and learn about the vast amount of opportunities available within our own community.  While networking, students picked up internship applications to apply for opportunities for their senior year.

At the Reality Fair, students were assigned a job and a matching salary.  Next, they stopped at various life stations including housing, transportation, furniture, cell phone, television, clothing, part-time job, pets, and more!  Their last station was to spin the wheel of life where they either got lucky and their grandma gave them money for their birthday, or if they weren’t so lucky, they got a flat tire and had to pay to get a new one.  After visiting all of the stations, the students met with a financial counselor where they balanced their budget.  The majority of students went over budget requiring them to go back to various stations where they had to make tough life choices.  They might have had to choose to take public transportation instead of buying a car, lower their cell phone plan, or get a part-time job.  Overall, the students felt like this experience truly was a reality check.  They learned the value of the dollar.

Lastly, the students attended the Counselor Information Session where they were given important information prior to entering their senior year.  This session included information to prepare for various life choices such as entering the workforce immediately after graduation, going into the military, or going to college.

This event took over 70 community volunteers!!  We’re so grateful for the support of this incredible Lancaster County community!  The feedback from the students was positive!  They enjoyed the opportunity and gained so many connections and life lessons!
