Meghan Gehr – Education Internship

My name is Meghan Gehr and I am currently an intern at Garden Spot High School. I spend my days interning Julie Groft, a gym teacher here at Garden Spot. I begin my day with Mrs. Groft at 1:15 where I meet her either in her classroom or in the gym hallway. The first five minutes of every block four is where I get my daily assignments. My daily assignments can vary from multiple things: including counting money, teaching, printing worksheets, and more.

I would have to say my favorite thing to do at my internship is teach the students. I especially got to do this during the volleyball unit. I began class with teaching all the freshmen the basics of passing, setting, and serving. They each got a few minutes to work on each technique with a partner. Then we put them all in teams and let the playing begin. They played for a while in teams of their choice and then the next day I tried to put them all on about equal teams. Currently, the playoffs are taking place to see which team wins.

In all honesty, the volleyball unit was probably the most successful but also the most challenging thing I’ve done this year. I really strived at getting my point across to the students and portraying my love for the game. They easily understood my directions and did as they were told. It is a great feeling when you work so hard for the perfect results. However, it was also very challenging at moments. It really tested my patience a lot. For example, some kids wanted nothing to do with this unit, so I really had to try to make volleyball fun for them.  Another example was when one student feared the volleyball. I did my best to pull her inside, without her friends noticing, and just remind her that she will not get hurt.

This internship has been such a beneficial experience. I have truly grown as a person, teacher, and coach this semester. I think I am most proud of my ability to stay patient with everyone and remain calm in times of chaos. This internship has also given me a glimpse of what my future can be like. Even though I am majoring in athletic training, I did get the feeling of what it is like to work with all sorts of students. In truth, Mrs. Groft is like a mom to me and I couldn’t be more grateful to have her as my mentor. I have had such a blast and I truly do not want it to end. All in all, thank you very much for this experience and allowing me to pursue my passion before even entering college!
