Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Cameron Roth – Internship

My name is Cameron Roth and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. This semester, I was able to be a part of the school’s internship program run by Mrs. Hackman. I was an intern with Mr. Fulmer who is the head football coach and math teacher at Garden Spot. With Mr. Fulmer being a football coach, I interned as a coach. Coaching is something I’ve been interested in a lot in my life. A lot of my extended family members have been involved with coaching in some way, shape, or form. Having a love for the sport of football and leading other are two things that have also influenced me in coaching.

During the football season, it can be very hectic for a head coach. You have to be in control of so many things. The coach must prepare the team and his coaching staff to ensure that he is putting the team in the best position possible to come out with a win that week. I helped coach Fulmer in many ways. One of those things I did was break down film. Although that does not seem like much, it is something that takes hours on hours to do. Breaking down the film is not only doing that for our team but also doing it for multiple games for the team we will be playing that week. I had to mark down things like the down & distance, the offense and defense’s formations, the outcome of the play, gain or loss of the play, what the play was, and other out of the ordinary things I saw. Doing one quarter in a game could take me at least forty-five minutes to do. It really is a long process that requires a lot of patience.

When the season ends, there is still a lot for me to do. What I did was go back to every single game we played. I found statistics on our special team and how well it did. From kick return yards to field goal distances, I found them all. I then went through every play on offense and defense. I found the tendencies in the team. That means I found out when we do certain things due to situations in the game. Finding this information can help out Mr. Fulmer and the rest of the coaching staff become better at calling plays and making adjustments for next season. Just like breaking down film, this was also a long process.

Doing this internship was something I do not regret doing. It taught me a lot about the game of football which then made me a better football player. This internship also taught me more about having patience. Going through all the film is not easy and will not take ten minutes to do. It can take a couple of days to complete one game. I enjoyed doing the internship as a coach because it was a job I am interested in and it helped make me a better person. I am thankful to have been put into this program and I highly recommend it to anyone who as the opportunity to do so.
