Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Nathan Kindt – Internship

I am enlisted in an internship with the wise and paternal, Neil Weidman, at his place of work which is the ELANCO High School known as Garden Spot. I am basically a student teacher where my main duties include keeping things clean (clerical duties), grading, participating in class lectures, as well as doing simple tasks he asks me to complete. There were two noticeably big projects that I have worked on during my internship. The two projects include the BBP (Bulletin Board project) and the mini-lesson that I taught in October.

Within the first couple days of being in the room and listening to Mr. Weidman speak and teach I thought of a bulletin board project that I wanted to complete that would add to the visual impact of his lesson. The other large project was to prepare to teach a mini-lesson to his ACS (Advanced Composition and Speech) students on how to write their 5 paragraph persuasive essay with further understanding of the differences between fact and opinion.

One of the challenges I have faced in this field of work is meeting deadlines. The BBP documents needed to be laminated by a specific date, my mini lesson needed to be planned and prepared, and grading quizzes need to be done on a timely basis. Another challenge is speaking in front of the class, whether it’s a lesson, reading a memoir, or anything else, I get a sense of anxiety. I experience an awkward feeling when I have to teach the students a mini-lesson, mostly because I am the same age as the students and do not have much more life experience then they do. Yet I am still someone who needs to teach my peers to better their essays and grades in this class. That in of itself causes me stress.

Although, the challenges that I have faced mainly deal with procrastinating, I still enjoy the idea of being a teacher. This experience showed me that I really like the idea of being a teacher either in traditional education or with my church as a youth or senior pastor, wherever God leads me. This internship has helped me be better prepared for a future career.
