Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Manufacturing Day 2017

The first week of October is the celebration of Manufacturing Week!  To celebrate at Garden Spot High School, 40 students hopped onto a bus to tour various manufacturing businesses right here in New Holland.  The first stop was at Quality Custom Cabinetry where students were able to tour the shop floor of a woodworking company.  While on this tour, students were able to see first hand each step that goes into the production of custom cabinets for kitchens starting from cutting the wood to a specified size and ending at finishing where hinges and door pulls are applied.

Next, our students were able to learn about food production at Savencia, Advanced Food Products, and Tyson Foods.  Savencia and AFP even gave us a peek into their R&D areas where we participated in a taste test.  The data provided from our taste test will be used in the development of their pudding products.  Additionally, at Tyson Foods, we were afforded the opportunity to hear the stories of many employees who earned promotions through on the job training and moved up through the company.

Manufacturing Day allowed students to learn about various high priority careers offered in the manufacturing industry.  These careers are not only enjoyable but also provide a comfortable living to many people.  These tours also allowed Garden Spot students to gain insight into many companies that provide opportunities right in our own backyard.  A big thank you to everyone who worked hard to put Manufacturing Week together!
