This week’s discussion article is about Georgia Gilmore, a woman who kept the Montgomery Bus Boycott going. Georgia Gilmore’s first ties to the bus boycotts came after she was shouted at for boarding the bus “wrongly” and went to “correct” it by going through the back door when the bus driver sped off without her. She then vowed to never ride a bus again and started to fuel the movement. Her and other women raised money in secrecy by cooking food and selling it in different places. This “money from nowhere” as it was called, was then used to establish a carpool system that allowed the protesters to not use the buses.

Questions:

  • Do you think that the carpool system was better than the bus system? Why?
  • Who do you think fueled the movement better, Rosa Parks or Georgia Gilmore?
  • What would you say if you had to explain the impact Georgia Gilmore and her group made on the Montgomery Bus Boycott?

Independent Novel

For this quarter’s independent novel selection, I chose A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. I chose this book because I remembered a book talk by Ms. Means in the library, and it seemed interesting to me. This book is about a girl named Harper from D.C. who gets abducted to another world by a prince who needs her to fall in love with him so he can break a curse. Rhen’s curse makes it so that he must live fall over and over again until he can get someone to fall in love with him. What makes his curse so dark and lonely is that when the 3 months of the season are over, he turns into some horrible version of monster that terrorizes his people. Rhen’s been in this loop for about 327 times now. It started off a bit like the movie “Beauty and the Beast”, only it’s got a lot more action in it and it’s not exactly a fairytale. (I couldn’t help myself and just read the whole thing so I won’t spoil the ending.)

New Discussion 2/5

Matches, Mad Hatters, and Ghost Girls (Achieve Article)

Radium Girls, working in a factory

In this article from Achieve, some of the most dangerous jobs of the Industrial Revolution are explored. The jobs of being a matchstick maker, hatter, and watch dial painter were exposed for their true harm to their employees in this article. Most of these side effects were caused by the chemicals that these people worked with. “Mad Hatters” for example, were called so because the solution of mercury they used on hat pelts was toxic and caused tremors, slurred speech, and erratic behavior. Matchstick makers were also exposed to a similarly dangerous chemical caustic enough to burn their jaws, disfigure their faces, and leave their wounds seeping with glowing toxin. Watch painters worked with a glowing, radioactive paint that when they were exposed to for long enough, made their bones crumble. This article clearly depicts the darker side of the Industrial Revolution, and can serve as a warning of damage we shouldn’t make our employees go through in the future.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Which of these jobs do you think was by far the worst?
  2. Which job do you think was the most impacting on the employees long term and short term?
  3. What would you think if you were in one of these employees’ place, at a dangerous job?
