6th grade visit to Penn State

Our sixth graders are working on a career unit this quarter. Students are discovering the many different career options available to them as they get older. As part of this discovery, students are going to visit Penn State next week. Check back to read their blogs about their visit to this local college.

Blogging Fun

Today our sixth graders had a fabulous lesson about blogging from our expert blogger Mr. Adam Geiman.

In the upcoming weeks and months, please come back to visit our site to see what our terrific sixth graders have to say. They will be blogging about activities, projects and topics that interest them.

Welcome to 6th grade!

Math test this week!

Hello families!

I cannot believe February is almost gone! We have had a very busy month.

Last week, approximately 10 of our sixth graders attended the Elanco School Board meeting on Monday, February, 25. At the meeting, we shared with the board our sixth grade program “Oh the Places You Will Go.” The 10 sixth graders shared with the board one word that was the highlight of their trip to Alvernia. I am so very proud of our students as they were very articulate and poised! Some of the words they chose were: exciting, pizza, basketball, interesting and inspiring. I am looking forward to the next stop on our tour Millersville University, which we will attend on Saturday, April 2nd.

In my language arts class, we are doing “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” as a read aloud. My students are very involved in this story. We have had some great discussions. On Friday, students finished their current literature circle book. Now, students will begin their culminating projects for their books. Tomorrow, Feb. 29, students will take their test on our story “Into the Ice.”

In social studies, students are finishing up a unit on the Branches of Government and the role of checks and balances in our government. For a final project, students created their own bill, and will attempt to get it “passed” in our classroom government. Students will present their bills this week, and will then vote on the bill they would like to get passed.

We finished our math unit on algebra Friday. Students learned about variables, expressions, equations and more. Our final test will be tomorrow, February 29. We will begin our next unit on geometry this Tuesday.

Hope you have a great week,

February News

Hello families!

Sixth grade has been very busy!

We completed our first trip on our “The Places We Can Go” tour to Alvernia University. Students toured the grounds and facilities of Alvernia. Our group had tour guides that not only showed us the locations, but shared their love of their school. After the tour, students had pizza and watched a basketball game. Students, parents and our New Holland staff had a wonderful experience. We will share our experiences at the next Elanco School Board meeting on Monday, February, 25. We hope you can join us on our next stop at my alma mater, Millersville University.

In my language arts class, we just finished the read aloud “Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life.” Next up, is “The Watsons Go to Birmingham.” Our students are also reading books for their literature circles. Currently, the class is divided in to 4 groups and each group has a different book. Each week, students have an assigned reading and a particular job. Students share their findings with their literature circle.

In social studies, students are finishing up a unit on the Branches of Government and the role of checks and balances in our government. For a final project, students will create their own bill, and attempt to get it “passed” in our classroom government.

Our math unit is all about algebra. Students are learning about variables, expressions, equations and more. Our final test will be Monday, February 29. We will begin our next unit on geometry the next day.

Happy New Year!

Hello families,

I hope that you had a nice, relaxing break with your child and families.

This month, we will start many new topics in class. In language arts, students will focus on writing informational essays. They will also complete a book project on the literature circle books we finished before the holiday break. In addition, we will start new literature circle books later in the month.

In math, students will learn about algebra, and in science, we will discover the different types of simple machines.

Special Meeting:

This Wednesday, the sixth grade teaching team, along with Mr. Barrett, and Mrs. Sneath, invite all sixth grade parents to attend a special meeting at 7 p.m. titled “The Places You Could Go.” At this informational meeting, we will present our plan for college visits, and explain why we think it’s not too early to start thinking about college. We sincerely hope you can attend.

Since our Language Arts and Math homework is usually the same every night, I have updated the homework page to reflect current homework practices. If anything should change, I will update it here.

In Language Arts, students are to read 20 minutes a night and submit one weekly reflection. In addition, they need to complete 3 spelling assignments of their choice, from any combination of Tic, Tac, Toe and Spelling City. All language arts homework is due on Friday.

In Math, students will do a teacher-created homework sheet every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each night’s homework is due the next day.

If you have any questions, please email me at:

Our students are busy!

Hello families,

Our sixth graders have been very busy.

In language arts, my students learned a new strategy to summarize material called 10% summary. Students are all also busy finishing up our posters from our last read aloud “The One and Only Ivan.”

In math, all sixth graders are working on a collaborative Rube Goldberg project, where they have to create five energy exchanges that result in turning on an item of their choice (light, music, etc.). In addition, we are working on positive and negative numbers, as well as coordinate planes and quadrants.

In social studies, students will perform a play this week centered around the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. They will also research representatives for various states.

I have been so impressed with the work my students have been doing. 🙂

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for coming in to discuss your child’s progress at conferences. Thank you for sharing your child with our sixth grade team. Thank you for being a part of a team who works to help your child achieve his/her greatest success. I thoroughly enjoyed the positive discussions we had about how much your child has grown this past quarter and the goals we have set for the rest of the year.

If I was not the teacher you met with at conferences, please feel free to contact me any time to discuss your child’s progress, or if you have questions. Together, working as a team, we can help make this your child’s best year.

In language arts, we just finished our STEM project. I am really proud of the great work your children did researching endangered animals. Each team did a class presentation and completed a poster, to demonstrate their knowledge. Hopefully, you got a chance to see their great work in the hall when you attended conferences. This week, we will start new books for our literature circles.

Our social studies lessons this month are focused on the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitutional Convention. Students are discovering how the Founders set up representation for each state in the federal government.

In math this week, students are discovering integers and graphing coordinates.

Please click the homework tab for specifics about this week’s assignments.
