In, All Hair is Created Equal, from Achieve the author talks about the discrimination and injustice that African Americans face about their hair. Starting with dress codes in schools that are towards African Americans’ hair. Dress codes that don’t allow afros, dreadlocks, braids, cornrows, etc is discriminatory because it is predominantly people of African American descent that have these hairstyles. This is because there is a stigma that these hairstyles are “unprofessional”. There has been a law passed in California that makes it illegal to have any ban of black hairstyles, and more states are following. There is also a natural hair movement that is help to embrace the curly texture of black hair.

Questions: -Why do you think people have this stigma that these hairstyles are unprofessional?

-What is a way that you could help with the stigma surrounding these hairstyles?

– Why do you believe that there are dress codes that are discriminatory toward African American hair?
