Book Fair Re-cap!!

Brecknock Book Fair – November 2016

The Scholastic Book Fair held in the Brecknock Elementary Library in November was a BIG success. Over $8,000.00 of books and school supplies were sold to Brecknock teachers, students and their families. The sales total was 1,000.00 higher than last year!

Many parents shopped at the Book Fair on the Parent-Teacher Conference Days on November 10-11. Students had the opportunity to shop when their classes came to the library during the week of November 14-18.

Many individuals received special prizes or gift certificates:
• 24 students received a $6.00 gift certificate (one per class by drawing)
• 10 teachers received a $15.00 gift certificate
• 3 lucky students were awarded a $30.00 Book Fair shopping spree!!
The winners of the shopping spree were: Liam Ray, grade 2, Paige Brady, grade 4, and Nathan Eberly, grade 5. A parent had to enter their child when they visited the Book Fair to be in this special drawing. The three names were drawn on the last day of the Fair.

In addition, many new library books are being added to our collection with the Book Fair profits: 100 paperback books were “earned” directly from the Book Fair cases and 60 paperback books were added to our Reading Is Fundamental program. Additional profits will be used for hardcover library books or equipment/supplies as needed.
Many, many thanks to the 25+ school volunteers who assisted with this project in the library. It wouldn’t be a success without them!!
The next Book Fair is scheduled for Nov. 2017.

Reading is Fundamental

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is a program that provides free books to students. Our RIF program is funded by PTO fundraisers with additional  books from Book Fair profits. Students in grades K-6 receive a RIF book twice a year.  This occurs in December and May.  First grade is sponsored by UGI and funding is provided for three books per year. In addition to the December and May distribution – there will be an additional distribution in March – during the week of Read Across America. The pictures below were taken at our December 2015 distribution in the library.

Library Updates – January 2016

Library and Book Fair 292

The annual Book Fair held in November was a HUGE success with over $7,000 in books and school supplies sold.  Many thanks to the parent volunteers and retirees who assisted students with their purchases.  It is a team effort to promote reading and it is great to see so many families encouraging students to value books and read at home as well as at school! We had a large number of male visitors after “Dads ‘n Donuts.”

The Book Fair profits were used to purchase 100 new paperbacks for the library and also enhanced our Reading is Fundamental paperback collection (free books to students twice a year).  In addition, the remaining profit will be used to purchase digital or audio content for the library.  The library collection is being updated several times a year to keep the best books available for our students.Library and Book Fair 297Library and Book Fair 294

Summer Library 2015 Re-cap

Brecknock Summer Library – 2015 Edition

The Brecknock Elementary Library was open for six Monday evenings in June and July this summer.  Each week children were invited to check out 5 books and participate in a variety of fun learning activities!  After a two year hiatus due to construction, the library opened its doors to a very enthusiastic group of Brecknock families.  Approximately 30 children plus parents and siblings of all ages actively participated in the program. In addition to book check-out and a multi age story time – students were invited to explore themes facilitated by staff members and volunteers.

The Brecknock PTO provided funding for this community based program.  The library staff including Mrs. Putt, Mrs. High and Mrs. Bollinger planned the Summer Library Program with the support of building principal, Mrs. Andersen.

The themes were facilitated by the following staff members:

Fitness Fun with Mrs. Epler

Spectacular Science with Mrs. Braverman

Hats off to Reading with Ms. Zoleski

Make Some Music with Mr. Goodman

Creative Kitchen Capers with  Parent Volunteers

Book Bonanza with Mrs. Putt
