NHS Celebrates Read Across America

Members of the National Honor Society visited the District’s three elementary schools to help them celebrate Read Across America on Friday, March 2. The event is held each year to celebrate reading and is traditionally held on Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  NHS members visited several classrooms to talk with the younger students and to read stories to them.  The project was coordinated by National Honor Society members and librarians in all the buildings.  Students of all ages enjoyed the special day!

United Through Reading Book Drive

Reading is an important aspect in a child’s life. Give the kids of military families the gift of reading with their parents by graciously donating a children’s book for the United Through Reading Program. Through the USO, deployed military parents are recording reading books via DVD for their child to watch at home. The child receives the book and an opportunity to share a precious moment with their Mom or Dad.
The Garden Spot HS Leo Club is asking for a new or very gently used children’s books that you would be willing to donate for this purpose. The following link lists recommend books by the USO:http://www.unitedthroughreading.org/booklist/
Books can be dropped off in the High School care of Mr. Martin or Mrs. Crossgrove. The deadline to donate is March 31st.
The LEO Club’s goal is to collect 50-100 books for deserving military families.

YPC Collects Items for Homeless

Garden Spot Youth Peace Council (YPC) has been hard at work collecting needed items for the homeless at Water Street Rescue Mission.  They travelled to the Lancaster YPC meeting with other Lancaster area schools to hear a presentation from Water Street about poverty and homeless issues.  Our students collected items on their needs list and compiled Totes of Hope with the other schools.

In addition to helping those in our community, YPC is also thanking those in our school who work hard and are often not recognized.  YPC appreciates the cafeteria workers consistently helping out with new students in our building and the interactions and relationships they make with our students during  lunch.  The group put together bags of candy for our cafeteria workers along with appreciation messages in October.  The group will be doing the same for our bus drivers in the Spring.

YPC is also working on fundraising for KIVA, the program provides micro-loans for entrepreneurs starting businesses in third world countries.

NHS Students Meet the College Freshman

National Honor Society alumni from the class of 2010 returned to Garden Spot on Dec. 22 to meet with current NHS members.  The recent graduates participated the Meet the College Freshmen program, and shared advice on surviving and coping with the first semester of college.  They offered insight into how to select classes, how to cope with roommates, how to get involved with clubs, and how to prepare now for college life. They also discussed which classes and experiences at Garden Spot have helped them in college.   Current NHS members had a chance to ask questions and to socialize with the returning members.  The graduates who participated attend a variety of colleges such as Penn State, Temple, West Chester, Messiah, and Syracruse.

Students, faculty, staff, and visitors to Garden Spot High School in December are greeted with seasonal greetings and drawings on doors and windows.

Members of the National Honor Society used their artistic talents to “deck the halls” of the school.  The Deck the Halls project has been a long-standing tradition at the school, and NHS members enjoy spreading holiday spirit with everyone in the school.

On October 29, the Future Business Leaders of America held their annual chicken BBQ with Hen House Grilling.  All profits help FBLA pay for upcoming leadership fieldtrips.  When they scheduled their chicken BBQ last year, they never expected a snow storm in October! Even though it was very cold (36 degrees!!) and SNOWING in October, the dedicated FBLA members kept their spirits up by making the best of a very cold situation!  They sold all of the chicken by noon!
