In reading, we have been talking about how to find the theme in our stories. The strategy that we talked about this week was Digging Deeper for Big Topics. We talked about big topics that reoccur in our books that teach us lessons. During the week we read stories and watch short animated films to discover the big ideas and themes in theme. As you read at home with your child, you can ask them the question: “What is the lesson you learned? What is the central message? What is the theme of the story?”

In math, we have been reviewing how to solve word problems. We are using Word Problem Solving Mats to help us make sure that we are paying attention to the things we know, what we need to solve for, and that we are showing our work. We will be continuing to work with word problems in depth.

In content, we continued our Museum Exhibit Project. Each learner chose a person he or she wanted to research and they began researching more about them. We are beginning to make exhibit projects to showcase our learning. We look forward to sharing our Living Wax Museum with you on Friday, March 6th at 2:45 PM!

In reading, we have been talking about how to find the theme in our stories. The strategy that we have focused on is called Last Words. Here is the strategy: First, reread the last page/final words. Second, think about the story and what the characters learned. Third, rephrase your thought into the theme by saying, ” I learned…”. As you read at home with your child, you can ask them the question: “What is the lesson you learned? What is the central message? What is the theme of the story?”

In math, we reviewed what we know about measurement. We also had some hands on measurement practice making Measurement Rainbows. We measured out each strip to create our rainbows.

In content, we continued our Museum Exhibit Project. Each learner chose a person he or she wanted to research and they began researching more about them. We are beginning to make exhibit projects to showcase our learning. Keep an eye out for an invitation to our Living Wax Museum on Friday, March 6th at 2:40 PM!

This week we had a busy week with our early dismissal and Valentine’s party!

In reading, we finished our opinion writing and moved into reading fiction stories again. We focused on how our characters respond to events in the story. As you read at home with your child, you can ask them the question: “How does the main character respond/react to the main event in the story? How do they feel? What did they say? What did they do?”

In math, we talked about three different types of graphs: picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. We also created our own survey question and made a graph to represent our data. Next week we will return to solving word problems.

In content, we began our Museum Exhibit Project. We chose a person we wanted to research and we began researching more about them. This will continue into the next few weeks.

2/17/20 No School

2/21/20 Family Game Night 6:00-7:00

In content we began a history unit where learners have been tasked with creating a Living Wax Museum exhibit about a famous person that they have chosen. This week, we took time to learn about a variety of famous people in our state, country, and world history. After choosing the person they wanted to create their exhibit about, learners began to research their famous person. We will continue our research over the next few weeks and we will begin to create our exhibits after our research has been completed.

In math, we have learned all about coins and counting collections of coins. Next week, we will begin to talk about different types of graphs and we will complete a special Valentine’s graph using conversation hearts.

In reading, we have been talking about persuasive writing. Learners answered the question: Which pet do you think is the best pet to own? The used the OREO model to help them plan their writing. OREO stands for Opinion, Reason, Examples, restate Opinion. Learners also helped peers revise their writing. Next week, we will talk about how characters in stories make decisions and how those decisions can affect the story. We will also compare similar fairy tales and see how one different decision can change the outcome of the story.
