The dumb deer

Once upon a time, there was a deer named James.  He lived in the woods near a river.  “Let’s go out to the river and get something to eat.” Said James to Percy.  “NO!” said Percy.  “We might run into hunters and get shot!  We’re not going.” “You’re not.” James said under his breath.  When it was dark out, but it was getting lighter, James snuck out of their home and headed off for the river so he could see his food.  Just then, he saw a wierd looking house, he had never seen this house here before.  “I’m going to go in and see what’s in there.” He said.  Just then, he heard a wierd squeaking sound.  The sound was actually the door of the house opening.  “What’s this wierd creature wearing a leaf costume.”  Thought James.  “I’m going to go say hi to him.”  He started walking up to the “wierd creature”.  Just then, he pulled out a bow and arrow.  “Man, this creature is wierd.” But before he could walk any farther, he was dead.

Compare and Contrast: Spring + Fall

Fall and Spring

By: Ryder Hertzler

Spring and Fall have many similarities and differences.  In Spring, leaves form, while in the Fall, leaves fall. In the Spring, school ends, and on the other hand, in the Fall, school starts.  A final difference is Spring is after Winter, whereas Fall is before

Winter.  Spring and Fall also have similarities.  They are both seasons and they both get a lot of rain.  Spring has a moderate temperature as well as Fall. Fall and Spring are both similar but they have some key differences.

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People: #4: Think Win-Win

The 7 Habits: #4:Think Win-Win

By: Ryder Hertzler

I want to personally want to work on habit #4: Think win-win.  To Think win-win is to not only think of yourself, but think of others.  It means not every time there is a winner and there is a loser, they can both win.  You have to think of other, even when you are ahead of them or beating them. I want to work on this habit because I fight with my brothers a lot and I sometimes argue with kids at school.  If I think win-win, then I don’t have to fight with my brothers or argue with people at school, I can think win-win and not start the fight so one of us doesn’t get hurt physically or mentally.

The Runaway Orphans: Chapter 3:

An Important Discovery

If you haven’t read chapter 1 and 2, read them before you read this because you won’t know what’s going on.

When he got to the bottom of the steps, he took a brief glare around the room.  He started walking in the direction of the orphans. “We’re not going upstairs until we find the orphans.”  He started knocking over everything in his path. “A-ha.” he said. “There you are. You’re coming with me.”  He took them upstairs and locked them in a closet, tied up. “I’ll deal with you later, right now, me and my daughter are eating dinner.” Then he walked away.

The ropes weren’t too strong, and after struggling for a couple of minutes, Mark finally managed to get his one hand free.  Then he untied his other hand until they were both free. It was getting late and even though the orphans tried to stay awake, they finally drifted off.  While they were sleeping, the door silently cracked open, and their neighbor snuck in. He then put a tracking device on both their shoes. Then, he left, but he forgot to lock the door.

In the morning, the orphans woke up. “We have to find an escape.” Said Abigail.  Just then, the orphans saw the crack in the door. “Let’s go.” Said Mark. “Wait.  Our neighbor might be out there.” Mark cracked the door open a little more, and didn’t see anything.  “Coast is clear.” He said. Silently, the orphans opened the door and ran out in the open. Their neighbor was nowhere to be seen.  “Quick, let’s go.” Said Mark. “Wait, let’s find out what he is up to.” Staying undercover, the orphans went around the house searching for clues.  Just then, they saw steps leading upstairs.

“Should we go up?”  Abigail said quietly.  “Let’s go.” Said Mark. Quietly, Mark stepped onto the step and so did Abigail.  Then, they began crawling up the steps. When they got to the top, Mark looked and saw 4 doors. “Let’s take this one first.”  They crawled over to the door and silently turned the knob. It was the bathroom. Then, they went to the second door. Nothing again.  It was the same with the third door.

“Listen” said Mark “I hear something.”  It was the sound of a machine coming from the fourth door. The sound got closer and closer as they approached the fourth door. He quietly turned the knob, but it was locked.  Just then, Mark stepped on something that looked suspicious. He looked closer and saw that it was a trap door. He opened it and there was a ladder leading down to some secret room. They went down and saw that there was a machine making posters saying  “If you see my 2 kids, please return them to this address: 1751 Kindness Drive. $500,000 reward.”

That was the address of the house right next to the Chompy River.  Anyone who has ever entered the river hasn’t come out because of the crocodiles.  The orphans knew if anyone found the poster and then found them, they would be chomped up by the crocodiles.  They unplugged the machine. Then they looked over and saw an envelope that was mailed to California. It read, “When they reach you, handle them on your own, and remember, don’t handle them with care.” “Why did Mom and Dad tell us to go to California?” Said Mark.  “Maybe they knew he was bad and they actually didn’t want us to go there, but they said it so our neighbor wouldn’t find out.” Said Abigail. “Then do you think mom and dad are still alive?” Said Mark.

  Captured!

If you haven’t read chapter 1 of The Runaway Orphans, do that before reading this because you won’t understand what’s going on.

Their neighbor was standing a few feet away, when he walked past them and went around the corner.  Mark, surprised said,” we’d better get out of here, quick before he comes back.” The orphans quietly got onto their feet, and peeked around the corner.  There he was standing right there only a couple of yards away. The orphans then realized that fleeing the scene would be too much of a risk and that they should stay put until he goes around the corner. There he was getting farther, his footsteps pounding against the grass.

When he was about 3 steps away from the next corner he suddenly turned around and started walking in the way of the orphans.  Realizing that they would caught they started running in the other direction. They peeked around the corner and saw their neighbor running around the other corner in their direction. They panicked.  His back door was a few feet away from them and right now it seemed like their only hope.

“Quick, in here.” Said Abigail.  They quickly ran in the door before their neighbor could see them.  “That was a close one.” Said Abigail. “We’d better hide, he’s going to be back soon.” Said Mark.  Mark glared across the room and saw a door. “That looks like the basement door.” Said Mark. They quickly ran over to the door and pulled it.  Sure enough, there were steps going down. “Let’s go.” Said Mark. As fast as they could and as quiet as could be they started going down the steps.

When they got down, they hid behind a couple of boxes in the dark, silent room.  Just then they heard the back door open. “Uh, oh.” Said Mark. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes turned to hours.  Suddenly, the basement door opened. Seconds later, the room was flooded with light, and footsteps began pounding the steps.  “What are we going to do?” Whispered Mark. “I don’t know.” Said Abigail. Just then a voice said,” dad, where is the freezer again?” Then a voice replied,“ Look behind the 3 boxes stacked on top of each other.”

Just then, they heard footsteps walking toward them.  “Hey, what are you doing here?” A voice said. “We are trying to hide from your dad, he is trying to steal our fortune.” Said Abigail.  “Why are you hiding here though?” said the girl. “We have to escape this house before your dad steals our fortune.” The girl didn’t seem too happy, her face looked angry.  “I’m telling my dad you’re down here.” Just then she started walking upstairs. Quickly, the orphans looked for an escape. There was only 1 window, but they weren’t able to get to it.  Just then, they heard 2 pairs of footsteps walking down the steps. “Come out orphans, I know you’re down here. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Just give me your fortune, or I’ll make you.”  It seemed hopeless that the orphans would get out. There was no escape.

The turn around

If you haven’t read parts 1-7 you should read them before reading this chapter.

“We’ll take it,” said Mammoth.  “We’ve been battling for a long time,” said Joe.  “How will it help us win the battle?” Said Jake.  “One of the reasons why he turned his back on me is because I had a secret room and I had the key and there is a treasure in the room.  “Why didn’t you share it with him, he is your brother right?”  Said Joe.

“Never mind,” said Lady Licorice.  “How will we get to Lord Licorice?” said Mammoth.  “We will have to sneak past the guards,” said Lady Licorice.  They started sneaking past the 9 guards which were sleeping at night.  It was really easy to sneak past the guards but not the spy cameras.  Jake found some rocks and threw them at the spy cameras.  Unluckily for them Lord Licorice saw them and he knew exactly where they were but he didn’t see the key or Lady Licorice.

He sent 30 guards and he knew they wouldn’t escape this time but if they did, he was going to go hard on them.  When they saw the guards coming they ran back but behind them  guards were coming too.  “This way,” said Mammoth.  They ran that way until they couldn’t run any more.  They hid behind a rock.  “We’re almost to Lord Licorice,” said Jake. “ We can’t give up now.”

They just started running toward where Lord Licorice was.  Out of nowhere a big gum ball starts rolling right at them! “RUN,” said Jake, But Mammoth was scared.”I said RUN or you will get squashed.” But in a few steps there were lots of guards. Mammoth then replied,” solong good knowing you pale,” Then lady Licorice came and said,” come here there’s a secret hideout.” So they ran to lady Licorice and that saved them.

“How do you know about this room,” asked Mammoth? Okay I will tell you but promise not to tell anyone, OKAY! “We promise said”, said Jake and Mammoth. “But first let’s get out of here and out of this place, I have a bad feeling about this,” said lady Licorice. Once they got to a safer spot about a mile and a half away from lord Licorice.”The further the better,” they all said. Then Mammoth asked lady Licorice,” Can you tell us about you knowing this place and secret room.”

Behind The Scenes

If you haven’t read chapters 1-6 you should read them before reading this chapter

The guards grabbed them and took them away to Lord Licorice.  They walked for like 20 minutes but when they were halfway there Jake found a stone and threw it at a siren and immediately it went off.   Then all the guards dropped them and started going to the sound.  “Good work Jake,” said Mammoth  Then they were off to where they were, but just then the siren stopped.

They got back and shut the door right in time so the guards couldn’t get in.  They ran over to where the crystals were.  Jake looked very closely and he saw steps.  “Let’s go,” said Jake without noticing that these crystals were hard.  He ran right into a crystal and fell down and sprained his ankle.  He couldn’t go up the steep steps so he decided to hide in the crystals just in case the guard broke in.

Joe and Mammoth got through the crystals while Jake hid in the crystals. Joe and Mammoth went up the stairs. Then the guards broke in the room and then one guard said to search for these people and he held up a paper that said WANTED Jake, Mammoth and Joe.  It said, “whoever finds them first gets the biggest Smartie lollipop ever and world’s largest chocolate bar.”

Joe, and Mammoth didn’t know that the guards broke in and started climbing the ladder, almost to where the guards could see them.  Luckily Jake whispered and said to them, “the guards are in here, climb back down.”  When they were climbing back down one of the flashlights slipped out of Joe’s pocket’s and hit the ground and turned on and made a big noise.  They heard the door shut right before that.  The guards heard it but they couldn’t make it back in intime.

Jake’s ankle was feeling better and they climbed up the ladder into a room.  Luckily the guards didn’t come back in.  Jake, Joe, and Mammoth climbed up the ladder into another room.  Just then they saw somebody locked up and in chains.  Mammoth free’d her, and they asked her who she was.  “I’m Lady licorice Leo licorices sister, but he captured me.”

“Come follow me.”  They followed her back to the crystal room.  She smashed a crystal and it had a key inside it.   “This key will help win the battle for you,” she said.
