What is the Big Issue?

By: Gabe and Ajla

Could you imagine what your life would be like if you didn’t have access to food or the money to buy food for your family? The global goal this address is zero hunger. According to www.globalgoals.org, “Hunger is the leading cause of death in the world”. This bothers us because everyday people all over the world are starving and don’t have a choice but to try to find or beg for some food. This global goal is important to us because it is a very big problem that the whole world is facing.

Day after day we see kids throw away food in our school cafeteria. That bothers us a lot because kids throw away unopened food that they don’t eat. For example, kids in our school throw away so much unopened milk everyday. To address this issue, we have come up with an idea that will help food waste. I will tell you what a food table is. A food table is where if you don’t want your milk or juice you can put it on the table. If you pack, you can put your chips, Daminals or even your granola bar on the table if you plan on not eating it. If you are a student at New Holland Elementary School, and you do not have enough food, you can take food from our share table. At the end of the week, we will take the leftover food  and give it to the food bank and to the food pantry at Cross Net. According to Hunger-Free Lancaster County, “Lancaster is short almost 7.2 million meals each year, creating food insecurity for nearly 60,000 people or 11.4% of Lancaster County’s population.” By us donating food to Cross Net food pantry, it will help solve Lancaster’s hunger issue.

The idea we had that goes along with the food table idea is the food that is discarded except for meats and fish can be put into a compost bin. A compost bin is where you can throw food in it that is compostable like rotten fruits and veggies. You can also add worms to the compost bin so it will speed up the composting process. After the composting process is finished we would use the compost to grow fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or different types of pumpkins and squash. The gardener’s would be all the kids in the school so the jobs are shared with everyone. Also when the food is all grown we will have a public sale to raise money to buy food cans or give our produce that we didn’t sell to the local food drive.

We are two 11 year olds that want to make a change in the world. Food waste is a big problem in the world and there are too many people going hungry. We are trying to accomplish the goal of zero hunger by 2030.

All about my weekend

Have you ever gone outside and built a fort that is hidden from site? Because I have and during the weekend I was cleaning out my fort that had I made with my older brother, and adding on to it. What is cool about our fort is that it is windproof with a wind bunker. In the inside of the fort there is a massive wall made out of leaves. I also was just watching some YOUTube. That was my weekend.

My favorite place in Washington D.C

My favorite place in Washington D.C was the American Museum of history. I liked it because there was a lot of things to see like the batmobile from one of the batman movies, a ticket booth from Yankee stadium and the ruby slippers from the wizard of oss. It was very exciting to see all of the  cool exhibits.Capital Light Trails Brook Ward via Compfight
