Mrs. Whitson’s 2nd Grade Brook Trout!!!

In Mrs. Whitson’s 2nd grade class there are brook trout. There were 186 eggs and      they turned to alevin and they just turned into redd. 53 eggs did not make it so there were originally 239 eggs. They are black and brown. Brook trout are the only native  They have to have trout to the east.

When brook trout turn into alevin they don’t have a mouth, something on their stomach called a yolk sac which helps them eat. they have a certain temperature in their tank so they don’t get too cold or too hot. The temperature is 53 degrees. To get to the school they came in a UPS truck in a bag that came in a box with ice packs underneath it. Brook trout lay 1,000 eggs at age 2. Usually only 10 make it to adulthood. When brook trout are eggs they are clear and you can see eyes and the spine. Then the trout turn into fry. If you point your finger up and bend it the joint in the middle of your finger the fry is as long as that.

The trout have slime on them now. They help the fish swim faster and if a predator tries to grab it it slips. The scales protect the trout’s skin. Some of the trout are swimming crazily and some of them aren’t. They are swimming up to the surface. They are hiding in the closest place can if they see a shadow. They like eating Fishy flakes. They say Blub BLub BLUb BLUB! They will turn into fingerling soon. Some trout are swimming high up while others are staying down near the bottom of the tank. They will die if something or someone touches them.
