April 1

Writing PSSA’s

5th Grade did an amazing job taking their writing PSSA’s during March. Reading, Math and Science PSSA’s all fall during the month of April. Please be sure that your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a healthy breakfast so that he/she is ready to concentrate on the test. Please carefully read the letter about electronic equipment during PSSA testing. No electronic equipment (phones, iPods, ereaders) is allowed in the testing rooms. It is best for your child to keep these items at home.

February 1

PSSA English Language Arts Field Test

During February, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 across Pennsylvania will be participating in a field test of items for a new version of the
Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). In the past, the PSSA Writing test has only been given to students in grades 5, 8, and 11. In 2014, The PSSA test will reflect the Common Core Standards which will combine Reading and Writing into one English Language Arts (ELA) test. The purpose of this Writing Field Test is to validate new questions for next year’s ELA PSSA. We will not receive back individual or school score reports from this test. Our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the assessment on the morning of February 12th. Please help your child prepare for this day by getting plenty of rest and eating a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. We also request that you stress the importance of your child doing his or her best on this assessment. If you have any questions or would like to review the assessment, please contact the school.

Staff in the Spotlight – Meet Mrs. O’Donnell!

Mrs. Laurette O’Donnell is one of our fifth grade teachers at Brecknock Elementary School. She has been a teacher at Brecknock since 1989. Mrs. O’Donnell is a Garden Spot High School graduate! She studied at Millersville University. She student taught at Brecknock with Mrs. Kidhardt in first grade. She worked summers and breaks at Carter’s pricing and inspecting children’s clothing.

Mrs. O’Donnell’s favorite hobbies are gardening, supporting our troops, watching the Flyers and the Phillies, baking, writing letters, scrapbooking, and more! Mrs. O’Donnell lives in New Holland with her husband, Patrick, and her daughter, Sarah, who is a freshman at West Chester University this year! They currently have no pets, but the family has a soft spot for rabbits and have had several as pets in the past.

You may not know these fun facts about Mrs. O’Donnell! She once played “catch” with a dolphin at a marine animal park in Canada; they tossed a basketball back and forth! Her mother chose her first name, Laurette, after reading it in a novel. Her family farmed tobacco when she was growing up. She won a cow judging award in elementary school. 🙂 She loves baby lima beans!

To Mrs. O’Donnell, the best things about working at Brecknock are “the beautiful building and setting, great colleagues, supportive parents, and of course, our wonderful students.”

Mrs. O’Donnell enjoys traveling, and she would love to revisit states like Maine, California, and Oregon, and also visit new places like Arizona, Idaho, and Vancouver. She also enjoys reading and has a lot of favorite books, including Jodi Picoult books, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Thoughts of You My Friend edited by Susan Polis Schutz , Rule Number Two by Dr. Heidi Squier Kraft, Final Salute by Jim Sheeler, Attitudes of Gratitude by M. J. Ryan, Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and she just finished reading Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosney.

We hope you enjoyed learning more about another one of Brecknock’s fabulous teachers, Mrs. O’Donnell!

September 6

The Morning Mile Club is coming to Brecknock!

Our physical education teacher, Mrs. Epler, will be coordinating a morning exercise program for Brecknock students during the 2012-13 school year: the Morning Mile Club! We will start the year offering the program to students in grades 3-6.

Breakfast students will be dismissed from the buses at 8:40 AM as usual. We will continue to encourage students who are in need of breakfast to attend breakfast each day. After breakfast students have cleared the buses, bus drivers will dismiss the Morning Milers. They will enter through the main lobby doors and walk through the center hallway to meet Mrs. Epler on the playground.

Starting Monday, September 10, the following groups of students will be invited to join in the “Morning Mile Club” according to the schedule below for the first week of the program:

Monday, September 10 – Grade 6

Tuesday, September 11 – Grade 5

Wednesday, September 12 – Grade 4

Thursday, September 13 – Grade 3

Friday, September 14- Since this is an EVEN day (14th), Grades 4 and 6 will participate in the Morning Mile club.

Monday, September 17 – Since this is an ODD day (15th), Grades 3 and 5 will participate in the Morning Mile club.
Students who join in the fun will be shown the Morning Mile track and be encouraged to walk, run, or jog laps until 8:55 AM, after which they will report directly to homerooms.

Continuing for the rest of the year after September 17, Grades 4 and 6 will report to MMC on even-days, and Grades 3 and 5 will report to MMC on odd-days. We may look to add grades 1 and 2 during the second semester. Stay tuned!

If your child is a car rider and wishes to attend Morning Mile club, please have your child walk to the car drop-off doors and inform Mrs. Hogan that they need entry to the building in order to walk to the playground to meet Mrs. Epler. They should follow the same even/odd days schedule as listed above.

Please encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity to develop physical fitness and start the day off right!

Please feel free to contact Mrs. Hilt and/or Mrs. Epler with any questions or concerns!

Making a difference!

SPC Potter, SSG Johnson, and SPC Cervantes display the banner made by Mrs. O'Donnell's 5th grade class.

Our students and teachers strive to make a difference in our community and world, because Brecknock cares. Mrs. O’Donnell’s fifth grade class has been supporting our troops by sending personalized greetings and sentiments to SPC Benny Potter and his colleagues in Afghanistan, who serve our country in a United States Army hospital at FOB Salerno. The students created and sent his team the banner above, and they were delighted to receive it. We are so glad they shared this photo with us! SPC Potter informed Mrs. O’Donnell that he and his team would be sending the children a special thank you in the near future. Thank you, Mrs. O’Donnell and students for making a difference! And thank you, SPC Potter and team, for your service to our country!
