Staff in the Spotlight -Meet Mrs. Swavely!

Mrs. Mandy Swavely is a second grade teacher here at Brecknock Elementary. She is entering her fifth year of teaching. Before her time at Brecknock, she student taught at Blue Ball Elementary in a 2nd grade class. She also attended Millersville for her teaching degree. Before that she had many jobs including those at Sears, Marshalls, Wal-Mart, and working at a doctor’s office.

Mrs. Swavely lives with her husband, Josh, and her 4-month old son, Gibson! They have two pets, a Black Lab/Rottweiler mix named Bowie and a gray cat named Small.

Mrs. Swavely and her husband love to ride four-wheelers and snowmobiles in the mountains. She also likes to relax by reading or watching movies. Her favorite summer activity is swimming.

Here is a fun fact you may not know about Mrs. Swavely: she is afraid of heights and being in the dark!

When asked what she loves most about working at Brecknock, Mrs. Swavely says, “I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else than Brecknock. The faculty and staff here are so friendly and caring. I have made some amazing friends while working here who put a smile on my face every day. The students here are top notch and great to work with. They truly make coming to “work” each day a pleasure. To top it all off, our principal is the best of the best. She encourages and motivates us to do more and become more as professionals. She makes Brecknock a great place to be for all teachers and students!”

Mrs. Swavely loves to go on cruises because of the opportunity to see so many different places and people. She’s been to the Caribbean; St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Croix, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. She’s also visited Bermuda, and says it is absolutely gorgeous! She also loves vacationing in their cabin in the mountains and beach house in Delaware.

Mrs. Swavely’s favorite subject is science, and she also loves to learn about the Solar System. “It’s so big that there is always something new to learn and discover!” She also likes to learn about ways to become a better teacher and help students learn.

There are a lot of things Mrs. Swavely hasn’t tried, because she’s afraid she’d make a fool of herself. (Mrs. Hilt would like to add that she thinks she should try them anyway!) Simple things she’d like to do someday would be to dance in public and sing an entire karaoke song by herself. On a larger scale, she would love to do a wheelie on her four-wheeler, sky dive, and go skiing.

Mrs. Swavely has read a lot of great books, but her favorites would have to be the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. These young adult books were some of the most addicting books she’s ever read! She says, “The stories pull you into the vampire/werewolf world and it’s nice to live the teenage life again vicariously through Bella.”

Mrs. Swavely loves smiling. 🙂 She says, “Smiling’s my favorite! Honestly though, the world needs to stop taking itself too seriously. Life is short. It does a body good to laugh out loud AT LEAST once a day!”

We hope you enjoyed learning more about Mrs. Swavely!

#5 Staff in the Spotlight!

Meet Mrs. Muhr!

Mrs. Muhr is one of our 2nd grade teachers at Brecknock Elementary School!

She has been a teacher at Brecknock for 12 years, and before that she taught 3rd grade for one year in the West Chester Area School District.

Even though Mrs. Muhr is very busy being a mom and a teacher, she still finds time for hobbies such as cross stitching, organizing photos into albums for her family to enjoy, and doing crafts.

Mrs. Muhr’s family lives in Ephrata.  Her husband is a guidance counselor in the ELCO School District. They have two children.  Madelyn is a first grader and Joshua attends preschool.  They don’t have any pets, but her classroom frogs do spend the summers at home with the Muhr family!

Here are some fun facts you may not know about Mrs. Muhr. Her father was in the Navy and she moved around a lot as a child.  She lived in England for three years (5th-7th grade) and graduated high school in California in the east bay of San Francisco.  Another fun fact is that during high school, she was a cheerleader for a professional roller hockey team called the Oakland Skates and danced at the Oakland Coliseum for their games!

Mrs. Muhr loves working at Brecknock because she loves being around such kind and caring students and faculty.  She says, “Our school has such a welcoming feel and it’s great to come to work each day!”

Mrs. Muhr and her family enjoy traveling. Every summer they travel to Maine to a cabin on a lake with her husband’s family.  They stay at the same place that her father-in-law has been visiting since he was 10 years old.  They love planning day trips and discovering new places to see.  She is a self-proclaimed “beach person” and enjoys going to Ocean City, New Jersey in the summers.

Mrs. Muhr loves learning science with her students.  They are always so excited to discover new information about magnets, the solar system, and animal life cycles.  This year she hatched chicks at school for the first time.  It was a great learning experience that she definitely wants to do again next year!

Thank you, Mrs. Muhr, for all that you do!

Teamwork treats!

At Brecknock Elementary, many of our classes “buddy” with one another to read together and do special projects. It’s so nice to see the interactions between our primary and intermediate students! Mrs. Twaddell’s 6th grade class and Mrs. Muhr’s 2nd grade class worked on a special project this holiday season: they created magnificent gingerbread houses together and read Jan Brett’s Gingerbread Baby. If you visit our school, you can see the delicious creations in our main lobby showcase display!

Learning about life cycles

The second graders in Miss Dupas and Mrs. Muhr’s classes are currently studying life cycles through an embryology unit. In partnership with the 4H, students are learning how to care for a number of fertilized chicken eggs that are housed in an incubator, shared between the two classrooms. They are sharing their data in the hallway so students and visitors can follow the chicks’ progress. I had the chance to talk with some students to learn more about the project and how it has been meaningful for them thus far! Mrs. Swavely’s students will also embark on this learning journey soon! Enjoy!
