End of Quarter 1

Wow! I can’t believe we are already looking towards the end of our first marking period. The students have been really busy learning about sequencing events in fiction and non-fiction. They have also started exploring text features using non-fiction texts. Some of the titles we have read in the last few weeks are The Relatives Came, From Tree to Treat, Because Rosa Said No, and National Geographic Explorer magazines. It has been great to do some hands on and creative projects to practice these skills. For example the student did a group writing assignment to practice sequencing the steps of making a S’more. We then got to enjoy some yummy S’mores together! I’m looking forward to exploring new topics with the students in the coming weeks.

We have completed a few writing assignments as well. A few of these have been posted to See Saw. The students LOVE hopping on the site to post their work for you all to see and it’s fun to watch them create something they are proud of. Students have also worked hard on a short story which will be shared at conferences.

We have now taken three spelling tests. This is just a reminder that we work on a two week spelling schedule. Week 1 is I introduce the words and we sort them together. Students also have the opportunity to work in collaborative groups to practice their words as well. Week 2 is when the same words are sent home for independent study. At the end of the second week, we take our spelling test. If you notice your child is struggling at home with the words or if the words seem too easy, please let me know!

At the end of this week (10/27) the students have their Character Pumpkin due. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished products and hearing about all the books the students have selected to use as inspiration!

We are working the Book-It program this year. At the end of each month, the monthly log will be collected and in exchange, the students will receive a pizza coupon. As long as the students have filled out the monthly log and completed the book review on the back, they will get their coupon! Please let me know you if you have questions or concerns about the program.

Conferences are quickly approaching. I look forward to meeting with everyone. This is just a reminder that all of second grade is meeting with our Language Arts students for conferences. We have all left the top of each hour open both days of conferences for any questions regarding student math performance. If you have not signed up for a conference, you can do so from the first page of the blog!

As always if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I look forward to meeting with everyone in a few weeks!
